Abandoned factory in Malta

There's abandoned factory in Malta, a small town in Latvia. Quite a few interesting relicts, such as the information desk for their local cinema and culture house, or some decorative installation from 1990 that feature not only nationalistic symbols but also a hammer and sickle.

Senite

Sēnīte (Little mushroom) was a popular restaurant in Soviet times and even in mid-1990s. Located on the highway Riga - Sigulda, many people were attracted by this posh place. The building resembles a mushroom and did open its doors in 1967. Today it is closed and vandalized.

Nada Dimic

Nada Dimic used to be a popular textile factory in former Yugoslavia but after the independence of Croatia it has not gone that well and factory bankrupted. Today it is empty and abandoned, but the place might disappear very soon as demolition works of the site has began.

House of press

The house of press is one of the tallest buildings in Riga but it's left empty for already a couple of years and is awaiting demolition. The bottom floors are still occupied by some factory (most likely a printing house) and due to economical recession it might take a while until they need to vacate the space. In Soviet times the house hosted the most of Riga's newspapers and magazines.

Kaleju street

In general, the Old town of Riga is straight and tidy and it's not that easy to find something that would stand out, except maybe the ruins of chemistry faculty. I took these images at the end of Kalēju street.

Skrunda 2

This place of abandoned apartment blocks and military barracks was a secret town called Skrunda Nr. 2 in Soviet Latvia, only people with permits could enter it. It is estimated that about 9000 soldiers with their familities lived in it. The secret town hosted two radars for listening to objects in space. The third radar which was not finished, would have been one of the most powerful of such radars in the whole Soviet Union. The 60 meter structure was destroyed by explosives in 1995. National TV telecasted the pompous show. It took another few years until the Russian forces left the town in late 1999, thus halting operation of the last Russian military facility in Latvia.

The car cemetery

There's plenty car graveyards in Kosovo - after each kilometer or two along the highway should be at least one car cemetery.

The cemetery of cranes

In the outskirts of Minsk you can find the cemetery of old cranes. Instead of recycling them as scrap-metal, they have gathered dozens of these cranes in one place.
