25 March

25 March is a commemoration day of victims of Communist terror. In 1949 thousands of people were deported to Siberia, today people march from the museum of Occupation to the Monument of Freedom.

Latvian Notes

It's pity there isn't such thing as Kickstarter in Latvia (or Europe) where one can fundraise for a book or an art project. Anyway, if there would be such book that contains the best from the series Latvian Notes - would you buy it?

Latvian Legion Day

Every year on 16 March nationalists celebrate the Latvian Legion day that was part of German Waffen SS during WWII. Because of controversial character of this event it rather reminds get-together for police and media as there are hundreds of them in the streets of Riga on this day.

Barricades of 1991

Today people in Latvia remember the January events in 1991. Back then I also took some photos just straight after the events. Here are a few photos - from parliament and TV centre.

9 May in Riga

These are photos from the Victory day celebration on 9 May in Riga. In Latvia 9 May is more than just a victory celebration, it is also an expression of collective identity for local Russians. On 9 May thousands of Russians go to the park, sing and listen to war songs, greet war veterans and picnic in the park.
