Latvian Legion Day
Every year on 16 March nationalists celebrate the Latvian Legion day that was part of German Waffen SS during WWII. Because of controversial character of this event it rather reminds get-together for police and media as there are hundreds of them in the streets of Riga on this day.

The making of parking lot

It took about a month to destroy the building on Kungu street in Old Riga. It was built in Soviet times and served as a storage hall for the main department store "Universālveikals". On the ground floor there also used to be a stationary shop. For the past 15 years the building was not used. The destruction works finished a couple of weeks ago and the area has been turned into a parking lot.Photos by (c) Arnis Balcus

Goodbye, chemistry hall

The destruction works of the chemistry hall of Technical university (RTU) started about a couple of weeks ago. It has become also some sort of touristic attraction for many passers-by.

House of press

The house of press is one of the tallest buildings in Riga but it's left empty for already a couple of years and is awaiting demolition. The bottom floors are still occupied by some factory (most likely a printing house) and due to economical recession it might take a while until they need to vacate the space. In Soviet times the house hosted the most of Riga's newspapers and magazines.

Kaleju street

In general, the Old town of Riga is straight and tidy and it's not that easy to find something that would stand out, except maybe the ruins of chemistry faculty. I took these images at the end of Kalēju street.

Post office is gone

About a couple of months ago I posted photos of the same area where not all of the buildings of main postal office were destroyed. Today there's nothing that remainds that anything ever existed here before.
